Determining Kitty's Sex

To determine a kitten's sex, lift the kitten tail and look at the kitty's genital area. It can be quite difficult to tell the sex of a newborn kitten, so if you are unsure, make your best guess and then continue to check periodically. Let your Mom and Kitten Team know if you think you need to change the recorded sex for a kitten, and they can do this for you in our database.

Kitty Colouring

The colour of the kitten may give you a clue to its sex:
  • Calico (black, orange, and white) - almost always female;
  • Tortoiseshell (black and orange) - almost always female;
  • Orange - more likely to be male, although this association is less reliable.
